Review: Casio G-Shock DW5600E-1V

G-Shock watches are known for their ability to resist an impact. Did you know that Casio tested the impact of this watch by having a hockey player hit a slapshot at a goalkeeper, who caught it in his mitt?

If it can survive that, then it can survive just about anything. As one of the most affordable G-Shock models available today, we knew we would need to give this one a test run. The black model is the most common that is offered, but the yellow? The yellow. That is one awesome-looking digital watch.

Here’s what we discovered about this unique timepiece after spending some time with it.

#1. It has all of the functions you’re going to need. This purely digital G-Shock offers you a multi-function alarm, a countdown timer, an auto-repeat function, an hourly time signal, and a 1/100 second stopwatch. There’s even a calendar that has been automatically programmed through the year 2039.

#2. This timepiece is very easy to read at night. It features an EL backlight with an afterglow to make sure you know what time it is if you need to check your watch twice. The light stays on for about two seconds, but will also stay illuminated if you continue to press the button to activate the light.

#3. It’s not exactly a professional-style watch. This may not be the best watch to pair with a suit and tie. Just saying.

#4. The buttons can sometimes stick on you. If you happen to press a button from a slight angle, there is a chance that it will stick on you. Not that big of a deal unless it happens to be the illumination button and you’re watching a movie at the theater. A few flicks of a fingernail on the stuck edge will usually dislodge it. A small flat-head computer screwdriver was needed once. With a little patience, you’ll be able to avoid this situation almost entirely.

#5. The durability of this watch is beyond compare. Sure. It’s an ABS/Plastic case on this watch, but it also has the built-in durability that is the trademark of the G-Shock brand. Not only will it survive extreme impacts, but it is water-resistant to over 300 feet, will survive you slogging through mud, or your kid jumping up and down on top of the watch while it’s submerged in a puddle underneath the swings at the park behind your home… It’s virtually indestructible.

#6. It gives you the basics. If you need multiple time zones on your watch, temperature readings, altitude readings, or even a pedometer, then this isn’t the G-Shock that’s right for you. This timepiece takes on the traditional functions of a digital watch and nothing more. Press a couple of buttons and you’ll reach the feature that you want.

When you put on the G-Shock DW5600E-1V, then you’ll never want to take it off. You won’t need to do so either because of how durable this watch happens to be. Maybe you won’t hit it with a hockey stick – but smashing it into a wall? Into your car door? You won’t have to worry about a thing.
